FAQ: Frequently Asked Tattoo Questions

FAQ:

Q:  What makes Sweet Trade Tattoo stand out?
A:  We understand that there are many great tattoo artists out there, but Sweet Trade Tattoo prides itself on being dedicated to delivering the best experience possible, steeped in excellence from start to finish.  We are happy to go out of our way to make each experience a unique and enjoyable one.

Q:  Where is Sweet Trade Tattoo located?
A:  Sweet Trade Tattoo is located at:  3600 Lower Honoapiilani Road, Honokowai, Lahaina, Maui HI 96761

Q:  How can I make an appointment?
A:  To book an appointment with Sweet Trade Tattoo you must come into the shop.  After you consult with an artist, a deposit of 25% of your total tattoo price will be needed to book your appointment.  (A minimum of $60.)  You can also book a free consultation over the phone by calling us at 808-283-3831.

Q:  What if I can’t make my appointment?
A:  Call Sweet Trade Tattoo at 808-283-3831 at least 48 hours before your scheduled appointment time.  If you cancel with at least 48 hours notice, your deposit can be applied to a different appointment time.  Cancelled appointment deposits are non-refundable with less that 48 hours notice.

Q:  Do you take Walk-ins?
A:  YES!  Although we are generally busy at Sweet Trade Tattoo, we will do everything possible to accommodate walk-in appointments.

Q:  What are your tattoo prices?
A:  Our prices start at $80.  We try to find out how complicated and large the tattoo will be and price according to how long we think that will take.  Most shops do hourly pricing, but surprises don’t work well with visitors.  Very large pieces will be done on an hourly rate.

Q:  What do I need to prepare for my tattoo?
A:  Make sure you are not sunburned in the area to be tattooed.  It is recommended to get a good night’s sleep before a tattoo.  We also highly recommend a good meal right before you get tattooed.  Wear comfortable clothes and something that will make the area to be tattooed easily accessible.

Q:  What should I bring with me?
A:  A valid government issued picture ID, payment for your tattoo work, and something to do.  Some clients enjoy having their phone or laptop or a book to keep them occupied.  If you have a long tattoo session, a snack and something to drink may also be helpful.

Q:  I’m a little nervous about getting tattooed.  How do I know I can trust you?

A:  Sweet Trade Tattoo holds itself to the highest industry standards.  Most of our clientele comes form referrals.  We promise you are in good hands.  If you want proof, please feel free to check out our reviews on Google, Yahoo, and Yelp.  We also encourage people to call, email, or come in with any and all questions you have!  We love talking tattoos and we are happy to make sure you’re 100% comfortable before we tattoo you.

Tattoo After Care Instructions

A tattoo is like an abrasion, similar to a skinned knee.  During the healing process, less is more.  Leave your bandage on for at least two hours, and no more than twelve hours.  Do not clean your tattoo in an airport bathroom.  You can sleep with the bandage on if necessary.  When you remove the bandage, clean the tattooed area with cold water and soap.  (Cold water will feel better on the skin).

Keep the area clean and dry.  Be sure to pat the area dry after cleaning, not wipe.  During the healing process, use a cold compress or ice to sooth any irritation. After a few days of using cold, if needed, you may switch to plain hand lotion to soothe the area.  Use lotion without perfumes or dyes.  These things have alcohol in them and will sting your skin.  Do NOT USE any thick creme or ointment.  Your tattoo needs to breath.  Air is your best friend.  Ultimately, listen to your body.  On average, a tattoo will take two weeks to completely heal.

Hawaiian Flower Tattoos

Living on the island of Maui, Hawaii provides us with many naturally beautiful things.  Many of these beautiful things also make for amazingly beautiful tattoos.  Below is some of our favorite Hawaiian flower tattoos, which are very popular with both locals and visitors alike.

Plumeria and Hibiscus are the Hawaiian flowers tattooed most often.
Both of these flowers come in many varieties and colors.

Polynesian Tattoo

Although artist Trevor Kennedy also specializes in Japanese style tattoo, one of his (and our) favorite types of tattoo is Polynesian.

Below we have attached a few different photos of some Polynesian tattoo work.  This type of tattoo work is actually a language.  Shapes and lines mean specific things and each tattoo is a mash-up of the person's life story and what is important to that person.  Stop into Sweet Trade Tattoo if you are interested in getting some fantastic Polynesian work done by professional, knowledgeable artist.

The story of Maui

Below is an original art image created by Trevor Kennedy telling the story of Maui.

This is original art (made into our postcard) created by Trevor Kennedy.
This is the story of Maui.  Maui was a young man whose mother (Hina) was unable to get all her field work done during the day because the sun would pass over the sky too quickly.  As the story goes, Maui lassoed himself to a Koa tree on top of the volcano, then lassoed the sun.  He told the sun that he would only let him go if the sun agreed to slow down during the daylight hours, so that his mother was able to get all her work in the field completed.  The sun agreed to a compromise:  that the days would be long in the summer and short in the winter.  And so is the story of Maui.
